The final 5 reasons!
6. College Prep.
I attended Camp Foley for 8 years, going 1-month for 6 of those years. By the time I was 16 I had spent more time away from home than almost all of my peers at High School. As college came around, I was more than prepared to be away from my parents for a semester (with breaks). Many of my classmates did not have the initial emotional stability to manage on their own away that long from their families. I greatly attribute my ability to deal with homesickness to my summers spent at Foley.
7. Spirituality & Mindfulness.
Camp Foley provides a Catholic Mass service and Non-Denominational service every Saturday of each session. Catholic mass is a traditional Mass service that usually takes place at Foley’s wonderful stone Chapel. Foley’s Non-denominational service coincides with Mass. Each Non-Denom, as we call it, has a theme. These include, but are not limited to, environmental awareness, passion, and responsibility. Whether religious or not, all campers receive the opportunity to expand upon their spirituality and mindfulness throughout their time at Foley.
8. Creativity.
Camp prides itself on its athletic activities, projectile based activities and water activities, but we also have several awesome activities for those looking to further their creativity. I'll highlight a few.
- Crafts- Crafts has been at Foley for a very long time. This class allows camper to use arts & crafts item to make a plethora of items.
- T-Shirts
- Duct Tape Art
- Paper Mache masks
- Paintings
- Shop- One of Foley campers’ favorite activities is Shop (woodshop)! Those who sign up get to try out our different tools to build cool woodwork projects.
- Table Saw
- Jig Saw
- Handsaw
- Drill Press
- Sanding utensils
- Photography- Campers will use cameras to take photos of people at activities or anything they’re interested in taking photos of.
- Video Creativity- Groups will work together to come up with short films to be shown to everyone at camp at the end of the session. Some past videos included Music Videos, Movie Trailers, and even videos where campers pretended to be counselors!
- Guitar & Drums- Those who want to explore music interests can sign up to learn how to play an instrument! This is a very relaxing activity.
- Talent Show- Founder’s Day is a day each session where we celebrate Foley’s history and traditions. On this day we include a talent show in the festivities. This provides an opportunity for campers to showcase their many creative talents to all of camp!
10. Lasting Memories.
At the end of every session Marie tells us an old Native American tale about the significance of
memories. The one thing that will never disappear from a camper’s experience is the memories that they make at summer camp. I personally look forward to the day I get to tell future generations about the wonderful memories I had with my time at summer camp, and hope others do too!
