10 Reasons You Should Send Your Kids to Camp Foley (Pt. 1)

Registration is open for 2020! Have you registered yet? If yes, awesome - we can't wait to see you next summer. If no, what are you waiting for?! Perhaps this blog and the next one might help to answer some of those reservations by giving you "10 Reasons You Should Send You Kids to Camp Foley"; written by 2019 Marketing and Communications Intern, Elliott Newman.

Let's dive in with the first 5 reasons!

1. Giving your kid the chance to spend time in the outdoors.
One of the biggest parts of the Camp Foley experience is spending quality time in the outdoors. Campcraft class for campers who want to learn how to hitch tents or build fires. Every session we have several trips, including canoeing and biking trips where campers will leave Foley to explore camping sites nearby.
Whether it’s treehouse night for Foxes and Coyotes, tent and beach night for the Wolves, or cookout for the 1 week program, all campers will have the opportunity to enjoy one meal at an outdoor campfire and simply spend quality time outside. Each session has 3 large group campfires: opening, a friendship, and a closing. Campers will sing songs by a cozy fire while surrounded by the outdoors. Foley provides a

2. Chance to meet new people/diversity.
One of the most important parts of a child’s development is being exposed to those of different races and cultures. It is important to challenge your viewpoints or perspectives for further learning. Camp Foley is known for its cultural diversity that makes up both our campers and staff. Throughout our 95 years of history we’ve had people attend Foley from 30+ different countries. Within the first 4 weeks of 2019, there were campers from Mexico, Sweden, France, and Colombia. The latter half of the summer had campers all the way from Switzerland and Belgium! Counselors this past summer were from Cuba, Mexico and South Africa. During 3rd and 4th session, about 13% of our enrolled campers were from Mexico alone.

3. Variety of activities.
Is your child interested in trying Waterskiing? Wakesurfing? Archery? Riflery? Rugby? Paintball? Photography? Camp Foley prides itself in its vast array of activities it provides campers. Campers who attend Foley will be encouraged to challenge themselves for ribbon awards. As of now, we have 14 ribbon award activities and 15+ non-ribbon award activities (campers can still earn recognition for special achievement in these activities!). Many counselors will come up with activities like Weightlifting or Salsa Dancing. Perhaps a camper has a special talent for something that were not aware of? Foley provides a safe environment to for one to test their own abilities or try out many new activities.

4. A break from technology. (and the parents rejoice!)
Because Camp Foley emphasizes social activities with no technology involved, kids focus their enjoyment on one another. Smartphones affect the way children have social events together, especially in comparison to 20 or 30 years ago. Imagine a group setting where instead of using their iPhones, kids have to play directly with each other using their imagination, or through activities? This is every day for a camper while at Foley and it is a beautiful thing.

5. Lasting friendships/networking.
One of the main reasons kids continually attend Camp Foley is for the lasting connections they make with fellow campers. I still keep in touch with friends I met at Foley from 2012 and 2013. I even try my best to visit them when possible. There is a special connection we have that is difficult to get in any sort of school or other social experience.
Meeting new people can help one start building their network of professional connections. A study reports that referrals account for around a third of all extended hires (https://www.topresume.com/career-advice/7-top-job-search-statistics). The Camp Foley alumni network extends fairly far, and many generations. The directors, Alli and Marie, are also more than willing to give recommendations to campers, particularly those who show strong leadership characteristics while at Foley.
